The 80th Anniversary of the Oscar Winning 1939 Film:

There’s no place like Christchurch, so follow “The Yellow Brick Road” to the Regent Centre to see the wonderful “Wizard of Oz,” when  Twynham School present the stage version of the classic 1939 Oscar winning MGM  film musical in celebration of its 80th Anniversary year.

Travel over the rainbow to a magical kingdom filled with Munchkins, Flying Monkeys, Witches and Wizards and join four unlikely friends as they set out to discover wisdom, compassion and courage in the adventure of a lifetime.

Returning to the Regent for their seventh production at the Centre, Twynham School are delighted to bring L. Frank Baum’s classic story to life in their own special way at their home theatre in Christchurch.

Developed from the multi Oscar winning 1939 MGM film, The Wizard of Oz is an enchanting stage adaptation of this all-time movie classic, including all the favourite characters and iconic moments plus a few surprises along the way!

The Wizard of Oz follows farm girl Dorothy as she is transported with her faithful little dog, Toto, from her home in Kansas to go “Over the Rainbow” to the magical kingdom of Oz. Here, with the help of the Scarecrow with no brain, the Tin Man without a heart and the Cowardly Lion, she and Toto have to find their way home to her loving family.

In order to meet the wonderful Wizard of Oz, who alone can help Dorothy find her way home, the intrepid friends must travel down the Yellow Brick Road and then outwit the Wicked Witch of The West and her Flying Monkeys, as she tries to get her hands on Dorothy’s very special ruby slippers?

This production of The Wizard of Oz contains all the much-loved songs from the Oscar-winning movie score including Somewhere over The Rainbow, Follow The Yellow Brick Road, If I Only Had A Heart and We’re Off To See The Wizard.

This wonderful show is performed by a group of talented Twynham School students, including Olivia Shatwell and Megan McCall as Dorothy, Connor Stone as Scarecrow, Fred Primmer as Tinman, Rueben Tyler Wilkinson as Lion, and Poppy Berry as Toto.

A classic story, a legendary score from the Oscar winning 1939 film, breath taking costumes, exciting choreography and sparkling staging make The Wizard of Oz the ultimate family treat.

Wizard of Trivia

The Oscar winning Best Song, Over the Rainbow, was nearly cut out of the original film because MGM thought it was too long.

The award winning Judy Garland only played Dorothy in the film because MGM’s first choice for the lead role, Shirley Temple, was not available.

Judy Garland was awarded a special miniature Oscar juvenile statuette at the 1939 Academy Awards.  She called it The Munchkin Award.

This is Twynham’s seventh production at the Regent and it celebrates the 80th anniversary of the iconic, Oscar winning 1939 film.
