Dorset Moon, the summer season spectacle starring installation artist Luke Jerram’s renowned Museum of the Moon, which opens on Friday 28 June has been forced to head inside  to St. Peter’s Church.

By using the poplar trees to hang the Moon there are strict wind speed limitations. With the forecast being for a hot and breezy weekend this decision has been made in order to preserve the trees in Central Gardens, for public safety and to ensure everyone can still see the Moon over the whole weekend. The decision was made to move the monumental, seven-metre diameter moon sculpture, indoors to St. Peter’s Church, Hinton Road, Bournemouth BH1 2EE rather than lose the amazing opportunity to see an iconic work of art and the planned supporting programme. Some minor changes have been made to the programme which is online at www.dorsetmoon.com.

To celebrate fifty years since the first moon landing Dorset Moon is happening in three locations across Dorset chosen to encapsulate the county’s distinctive blend of coastal, rural and urban.

If you thought the moon was out of reach, then it’s time to think again. It has travelled all over the world and wowed thousands, now Luke Jerram’s internationally acclaimed Museum of the Moon is making its way to Dorset for the first time as part of Dorset Moon; the exciting new arts event for summer 2019.

At its heart is Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon, an astounding seven metre diameter spherical sculpture on which each centimetre represents five kilometres of the moon surface. This incredible installation is a fusion of large-scale NASA lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound audio created by Ivor Novello Award and BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones.

After stunning audiences all over the world Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Museum makes its Dorset debut in three stunning locations where, by the light of the mesmerising moonglow, a full programme of lunar-inspired events will create an experience that’s out of this world.

Dorset Moon is produced by the Dorset Festivals Consortium: Inside Out Dorset (produced by Activate), b-side and Bournemouth Arts By the Sea. Commissioned by the Arts Development Company with funding from European Regional Development Fund and Arts Council England.

Attending the event is free. 

Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally-lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface. It truly is an incredible experience.

An internationally acclaimed art installation that has travelled the globe is coming to Dorset for the first time in the 50th anniversary year of the first moon landing.

Please note a fourth weekend of community events – ‘Moonbury Rings’ – featuring Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon will take place in Dorchester, from 19-21 July. Although this is funded separately, Dorset Moon is working with Dorchester Town Council to make all four weekends as impactful as possible for Dorset.
