HOTELIERS TURN THE TABLES

Hoteliers across East Dorset are uniting to challenge recent negative headlines that have cast a shadow over the region, to shine a spotlight on the many strengths that make the area such a special place to visit.

The BH Area Hospitality Association has launched its upbeat campaign, Check In – Chill Out, designed to showcase the absolute best of Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole, highlighting community pride, local spirit, and the area’s outstanding attractions, celebrating the undeniable charm of the south coast.

Association chair Rosie Radwell explained: “Like many parts of the UK, we face some social challenges, but the way they have been portrayed has been exaggerated beyond recognition. Of course, as business owners we keep a close eye on these issues, but Check In – Chill Out is about more than that; it’s about reclaiming our story, reminding ourselves how fortunate we are to live and work here, and shining a light on the wonderful experiences awaiting visitors.”

The Association, which represents some of the region’s most established hotels and accommodation providers, is calling on residents and businesses alike to join the movement and celebrate what makes each corner of East Dorset distinctive; Bournemouth’s buzzing nightlife and cultural scene, Christchurch’s rich heritage and relaxed charm, and Poole’s proud maritime traditions and vibrant quay.

Add to that over twelve miles of stunning coastline, award-winning Blue Flag beaches, gardens and green spaces, family activities, restaurants and attractions, and the area offers an unbeatable mix for anyone choosing a staycation.

Tim Lloyd, director at the Captains Club Hotel in Christchurch, added: “We’re not ignoring certain issues, but the media spotlight has been skewed. For those unfamiliar with Dorset, the coverage simply doesn’t reflect reality. We are not wearing rose-tinted glasses, but we do want to challenge the narrative. Visitors who come here experience something vastly different from what they see in the media — so we invite them to come, check in and chill out, and see for themselves.”

The hospitality and tourism sector contributes around £800 million to the regional economy, and sustains thousands of jobs, making it vital to both community wellbeing and regional pride. Employers across the sector hope the campaign will boost community confidence and attract even more visitors.

Rosie concluded: “The truth is we are not alone. Most local people are incredibly proud of where we live, and we need to challenge the recent coverage that has painted an unfairly bleak picture. Through Check In – Chill Out, we want that positivity to spread — and when visitors feel it too, the whole community benefits. We can definitely feel the tide turning, people have had enough of the negativity.”
