Embracing the "Slow Travel" Trend this January
Forget the "New Year, New Me" panic. In Poole, we prefer "New Year, Same Amazing View". January is the season of "Quiet Season" tourism - a time when the harbour is still, the light is crisp, and you have the space to explore our history and nature without the crowds.
What can I see for free at Poole Museum?
Following its major transformation, the Poole Museum is the cultural heart of the Old Town and offers free entry. It’s the perfect place to shelter from a January chill. Explore the Harbour Life galleries to understand how this town was shaped by the sea, or check out the Sound of the Sea digital exhibition (running until 28th Jan), which is a hit with tech-loving kids and curious adults alike.

Where is the best winter birdwatching?
Poole Harbour is internationally significant for winter birds, and you don't need a boat to see them. Head to Upton Country Park (free entry, parking charges apply) and walk along the shoreline. You are likely to spot Avocets, Spoonbills, and Brent Geese overwintering in the safety of the harbour. It’s a mindfulness exercise that connects you directly with nature. For more outdoor ideas, browse our Things to Do section.
How can I explore the Old Town history?
Download the Cockle Trail map or simply follow the brass plaques set into the pavement from the Quay. This self-guided walk takes you past smugglers' haunts, medieval merchant houses, and the old guildhall. It’s a history lesson that keeps you moving.

Where to warm up after a winter walk?
After a brisk walk on the Quay, nothing beats a roaring fire or a hot meal. Our Food and Drink guide lists the best historic pubs and contemporary cafes where you can watch the fishing boats come in. If you want to linger longer, check our Accommodation pages to find a cosy base for your January retreat.
