Victorian Christmas

Victorian Christmas

About

In 2017 we travelled back in time and visited the Victorian Montagu family home. We saw what the family members would have been doing as they prepared for the festive season of 1889.

We posed next to the colourful life-size Gingerbread House for the perfect festive picture. We then followed the dazzling fairy lit pathway to Palace House to see the preparations for a traditional Victorian Christmas in action.

Visitors sipped a glass of warming mulled punch while soaking in the festive atmosphere, with stunning decorations, welcoming log fires and a themed Christmas tree in each room  - including a 22ft tree in the entrance!

Christmas Panto Rehersal

In the Lower drawing Room we watched a re-enactment of Montagu family members rehearsing their Christmas day panto in 1889. Visitors even had the opportunity to join in!

Christmas Crafts

We visited a Victorian Montagu family member in the Library to create homemade decorations, Christmas cards and Thank You cards.

Victorian Christmas

We watched Mrs Hale the Cook and Boffey the Kitchen Maid prepare for Christmas-time in the newly restored Victorian Kitchen.

Carol Singing

We warmed up our vocal chords to get that Christmassy feeling! Visitors gathered around the crackling log fire and piano in the Lower Drawing room and joined in with traditional Christmas carols.

Mulled Punch

We warmed up on those cold winter days by sipping a glass of mulled punch while warming ourselves in front of the roaring log fire.

Life-sized Gingerbread House

We posed for photos beside the impressive life-size Gingerbread House.

Giant Christmas Tree

We marvelled at one of the largest outdoor Christmas trees in the New Forest twinkling with around 15,000 lights!

Christmas Trail

'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house...not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.' There were a few hiding in Palace House - did you find them?

Tempting Gifts

We indulged in a spot of Christmas shopping with local produce and beautiful souvenirs in our two on-site gift shops.
