About
The presence of the human body, its physicality and its frailty, provides the unifying thread in this selection of Denise Webber’s recent photographic series and drawings. The work is seen alongside her earlier key video piece, Clay, which is based upon rarely seen nineteenth century still photographs from Eadweard Muybridge’s studies of the human figure. The exhibition includes new photographs printed with silver nitrate, using an early method developed by Henry Fox Talbot that became dominant throughout the mid nineteenth century. A monochrome process, it has the effect of flattening shadows and darkening flesh tones. The visible edges of the chemicals applied to the paper are a reminder of the illusory nature of an image, and its fragility.
