Corfe Castle - National Trust

Corfe Castle National Trust

A favourite haunt for adults and children alike, you can’t fail to be captivated by these romantic castle ruins with breathtaking views.

Discover 1000 years of the castle’s history as a royal palace and fortress. With fallen walls and secret places, there are tales of treachery and treason around every corner. Spot the ‘murder holes’ and count the arrow loops. Feel history come to life and see the wildlife which has set up home in these fascinating castle ruins.

The first stone of Corfe Castle was laid more than 1,000 years ago and its ruins now dominate the Purbeck landscape.  It has been a Saxon stronghold, a Norman fortress, a royal palace and a family home.  In that time it has seen murder and war, known kings and paupers and its rugged beauty has won the hearts of thousands of visitors.

You can visit the Castle tea-rooms and enjoy delicious cream teas and cakes and buy beautiful gifts and souvenirs in the unique National Trust shop situated in the village square.

Offering many special events throught the year including: Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt with crafts and games; Civil War and Saxon & Viking re-enactments; musketeer training school; storytelling; real life historical summer encampments; falconry displays; wildlife weekends; open air theatre and cinema.

Why not take the Sea Train with City Cruises from Poole Quay - boat ride, steam train and a castle at the end to explore!!

See website for full details including opening times and forthcoming events.

The castle is now run by the National Trust and opens to the public every day of the year except 25 & 26 December. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking 360 degree views across the Purbeck Hills from the top of the ruins.
