Guide to Ratings

At Poole Tourism we recognise that visitors have the right to be fully informed re the quality of accommodation. 

This is demonstrated by inclusion in the Visitor Guide and website of individual businesses accreditation with Visit England (Quality in Tourism), AA, and Dorset Accreditation, and shows the accommodation meets specific criteria designed to give you reassurance about your choice of accommodation.

However, we recognise, that for some businesses there may not be the business based justification for joining these schemes and we therefore now accept accommodation that does not carry a recognised accreditation, but have signed an accommodation charter.  

Gradings - Quality in Tourism and the AA rate accommodation to the same criteria, awarding one to five stars in each of the categories (or one to five pennants for camping and caravan parks in the case of the AA).   These ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience.  (Note - Hotel Stars awarded meet different criteria to Guest Accommodation)

Dorset Accreditation – inspected to minimum quality standards.   Every establishment has carried out a Fire Safety Risk Assessment and has Public Liability Insurance.

Self Catering Agency – not all properties offered may be inspected.  Check with the agency before booking a property to verify the situation.

Awaiting Grading – this logo indicates that at the time of publication the accommodation had applied for but not received their assessment.

No Grading – this does not reflect the quality of the business, and all accommodation can be viewed on the website prior to booking.

All businesses with no grading have signed an accommodation charter agreeing to:

  • Fulfil all legal obligations and responsibilities – including fire precautions, food safety and other legal requirements.
  • Maintain good standards of service and cleanliness
  • Welcome all visitors courteously and without discrimination
  • Maintain a fair and effective cancellations policy

Gold and Silver Awards – Quality in Tourism
Red Stars (Hotels) Yellow Stars (Guest Accommodation) – AA
Look out for Gold and Silver awards (QIT). Red Star or Yellow Stars (AA) which recognise an exceptional level of comfort, hospitality and service over and above that expected of their grading level. 

AA Rosettes
AA Rosettes show achievement in offering exceptional quality of food.

VisitEngland Welcome Awards
These awards highlight accommodation that provide specific welcomes to certain groups e.g. – Walkers Welcome, Cyclists Welcome, Families Welcome, Pets Welcome

Breakfast Awards (AA and VE)
Establishments that offer a quality and choice of breakfast, exceeding what would be expected at their star rating.

Green Tourism Awards

The Green Tourism Business Scheme
The GTBS is the leading sustainable tourism certification scheme in the UK.   Companies displaying this award show that they are implementing good environmental practices.
Three levels can be achieved – Gold, Silver and Bronze.

David Bellamy Conservation Awards
Awards are made to holiday parks which demonstrate an active concern for the environment.
Three levels can be achieved – Gold, Silver and Bronze.

The owners displaying a National Accessible Scheme (NAS) logo have taken into particular consideration the needs of guests with hearing, visual or mobility requirements. NB: Some of our accommodation display a disabled symbol, please note this is not part of the NAS Scheme and visitors should check with the accommodation before booking.

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, please be aware that ratings can change throughout the year.
