The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole has been recognised for its environmental efforts and has been announced as a winner at the 2016 Green Apple Awards link will open in new window for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage.

Accepting the Estate Management for Pollution Reduction award at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament, the Dolphin Shopping Centre was acknowledged for its work with retailers that offer sustainable products and get the local community engaged which complement its ambition to be recognised as a sustainable centre.

The Dolphin Shopping Centre’s winning entry focused on its work with retailer Déjà Vu Upcycling.  The centre attracted Déjà Vu Upcycling to its retailer portfolio as a six-week pop-up shop in 2015, a store where customers can purchase restored antiques and pre-loved furniture. This was the first upcycling store the Centre had included as part of its retail mix and stood firmly with the centre’s ethos of sustainability by offering a novel way to reinvent a piece of old furniture to give it a new identity.

Due to its popularity, the Centre welcomed the store to become a permanent retailer a prime first floor position in January 2016. Since then the store has achieved great results in protecting the environment by re-using and refurbishing pre-loved furniture.

John Grinnell, Centre Manager, says: “Winning a Green Apple Award is a huge achievement as it is seen as one of the biggest environmental recognition schemes in the UK and internationally. At the Dolphin Shopping Centre we are fully aware of the effect our activity has, not only on the environment, but on our retailers, residents and local community in which we operate. By being committed to preserve and protect the environment, we are continually looking at ways of improving our operational areas and to be recognised as a sustainable organisation.”

The Green Apple Awards are the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour.
