A House of Light - Open Day at Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts

Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts throws open the doors on Sunday 27 November to welcome visitors to its free, family-friendly Open Day A House of Light. The day provides the opportunity to explore Lighthouse and see some of the improvements that have been made during the building’s summer closure for refurbishment.

Lighthouse Gandini JugglingA House of Light promises visitors an enlightening day, with a mixture of performances to watch, encounters and installations to experience and workshops to try, led by national and international artists. Highlights include an exciting audio-visual installation by acclaimed lighting designer Ace McCarron, which puts the audience centre-stage and marks the starting point of an exclusive backstage tour full of hidden surprises. The world-famous Gandini Juggling return with a bespoke performance created especially for Lighthouse and  Sonia Sabri Company present a display of captivating and uplifting Kathak dance.

There is plenty of opportunity to join in with activities – British circus artists Nikki Rummer and Jean-Daniel Brousse host a children’s acrobatic taster workshop, teaching basic acrobatic techniques including lifts and climbs. Get your groove on with Dance For All, the south coast’s street dance champions in a family hip hop workshop, enjoy a taste of the West End in an all-singing, all-dancing musical theatre boot camp with Stagewise School for Performing Arts, or join in with the ancient  Indian floor art of Rangoli, where families can participate in a collective piece of artwork that will grow throughout the day.

A variety of exciting performances rotate throughout the day – look out for Michele O’Brien’s Ghost Tour which takes you around the building to discover the ghosts of Lighthouse, Associate Artist Hazel Evans who invites you to visit The Observationarium, and Bernadette Russell who will be reading her story The Tree of Light. This magical mid-winter story is full of forest creatures familiar and unfamiliar, night time adventures and poetry - plus you will be invited to add your own stars to The Tree of Light, for the opportunity to have your wishes come true.

A House of Light runs throughout the day on Sunday 27 November, from 11am – 5pm. Doors open at 10.45am and there is free entry for all.
