An exciting new strategic partnership was announced at the CLIA conference in Tenerife. The Port of Poole link will open in new window and More Than a Tour, a UK based specialist tour operator will link the Cruise lines, Port, Tour Operator and  local Destination Partnerships in what will be seen as a significant new approach to shorex in the UK.

The announcement was made at the CLIA Global Ports and Destination Summit in Tenerife which brought together the global community of senior cruise industry stakeholders. The summit focused heavily on shorex innovation and the need for collaboration across the industry, including much closer links with local destinations, which will ensure sustainability, influence and new opportunities within this crucial market.

Jim Stewart, CEO of the Port of Poole said “we are delighted to be announce a strategic partnership with More Than a Tour and look forward to working closely together with cruise lines to deliver an integrated and innovative approach to exclusive Shore excursions and destination immersion. Poole is one of the fastest growing cruise destinations in the UK and we will complete the development of our wonderful new cruise berth by the end of June 2017 and this has already created a lot of excitement in the industry. We believe this type of strategic partnership is essential to ensure that cruise lines and their guests get a true understanding of our destination. This strategy will now form part of an integrated Port of Poole proposition to our cruise line partners”.

The CLIA Global Ports and Destinations summit achieved a clear consensus that shorex requires real innovation and change to ensure that the cruise industry can meet the growing challenges of a more discerning customer base and an ever-changing technology threat.

Bo Larsen, CLIA VP of Strategic Partnerships said “we are delighted that this partnership has been announced at our summit in Tenerife. The message coming from the conference was clear: change is needed now and new collaborations between our industry and local destinations is an essential element in delivering sustainability for the industry. We wish the partnership every success and believe that this model potentially offers a new and dynamic way of approaching the transition from shore excursion to destination immersion”.

Paul Sherry, More Than a Tour sales and marketing director also sits on the Board of the New Forest Tourism Association and other local destinations partnerships. He said “we are delighted to work in partnership with the Port of Poole and I thank Jim and his team for all their efforts, as well as their vision to develop this partnership to drive necessary change. Our partnership marks a significant shift from standard shorex to destination immersion and provides the platform for much needed innovation. The industry must be pro-active members of the local destinations they impact. As Board members of our local destinations we are responsible for promoting but also protecting our destination. I can say, without doubt, that positive and pro-active engagement will sustain destination immersion and secure the necessary approvals and influence. This will in turn provide a myriad of new and exciting opportunities which are currently untapped”.
