Students primed to ‘take the field’ with AFCB midfielder Andrew Surman

Students from Poole High School were treated to a visit from AFC Bournemouth midfielder, Andrew Surman as part of a social enterprise programme led by Destination Education.

Andrew Surman Dolphin ShoppingThe ‘My’ Team programme, which is sponsored by Poole’s Dolphin Shoppng Centre, saw Year 10 BTEC sports students visit AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium and undertake a series of confidence-inspiring team building exercises.

Alongside AFC Bournemouth’s Community Trust team, and the management team from the Dolphin Shopping Centre, students learned about communication barriers, negotiation and team-work. The day also included a surprise visit from Surman who took part in a question and answer session with the pupils and explained the importance of being part of a team. Students also took away signed memorabilia from the premier league football club.

Dolphin Shopping Centre manager John Grinnell, said: “We are delighted to have worked with AFC Bournemouth to provide this engaging, thought-provoking workshop for students from Poole High School.

“Andrew Surman’s input was inspiring and really caught the attention of the students, who of course look up to role models and people in a recognisable position to comment on the complexities and effectiveness of team work.”

Commenting on the scheme, AFC Bournemouth midfielder, Andrew Surman, added: “What’s brilliant about Destination Education is to see young people actively wanting to participate in team-working activities. Being a capable and effective team-player is crucial to success. Whether it is winning a football game, league, or cup, or being able to take on challenges that occur across life, including business situations and the workplace, team-work is key.”

The programme, which is also being offered to Lytchett Minster School, Magna Academy, Corfe Hills and St.Aldhelm’s Academy, will provide students with the tools and techniques to develop the skills that will help them to be an effective team member.

Destination Education offers a range of programmes focusing on employability skills such as career planning, team-work and interview technique. The students are led through a range of exercises and discussions to explore their aspirations for the future, supported by materials, videos and music.
