First public glimpse of Poole's iconic landmark concepts
FIRST PUBLIC GLIMPSE OF POOLE’S ICONIC LANDMARK CONCEPTS
Officers from Poole Borough's Arts Development Unit and the Planning department are working with Land Securities to create a work of art for the benefit of the locality. The five concepts for the iconic landmark, to be situated at the Poole Commerce Centre (on the A35 between Poole and Bournemouth), will be on public display from 29h October.
Drawing on local history and legends to the wildlife of the area, the unique concepts celebrate Poole’s vibrant heritage. Selected from an international open tender, the designs have been created by South-West award winning artists Cod Steaks.
Something Fishy
The conspicuously named ‘Cod Steaks’ has been supplying the arts and media industry with award winning design and construction for over 25 years. From creating all the sets and models for the Aardman Animations features, to winning the latest public art commission for Poole, Cod Steaks talented team of designers and craftsmen work closely together to create exciting, ambitious and innovative pieces of art, to inspire and engage with the local community.
The public are being welcomed to view the designs, before the final decision is made on which concept will be built.
Sue Lipscombe, managing director of Cod Steaks, says: “Cod Steaks understands the importance of creating artworks that mean something to the local community and relate specifically to the area.
We hope that the people of Poole will take advantage of this unique opportunity to view the designs and provide feedback for something that will become an important part of town’s identity.”
Funders
The commissioning of the new artwork is part of a Section 106 agreement between the Borough of Poole and Land Securities, who are the site developers and commissioners.
The concepts will be on display at the Homebase store from 29th October to 7th November. As well as visual design concepts, scale models of the designs will be viewable and the public are encouraged to join the database to be kept up to date with the work-in-progress. Installation of the work will be during 2009.
