With a 41% increase in hate crime post-Brexit, nominee for Best New Play in the Off The West End awards 2018 (The Offies) and BAFTA winning writer John Foster, presents a harrowing play entitled RIDE! at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on 27 January.

Based on a true story, Foster’s play is about racism and highlights the 1998 incident in which the African-American James Bird Jr was taken by three members of the Ku Klux Klan and murdered.

The play details the horrific and harrowing journey experienced by James Bird Jr whilst in the presence of the three white supremacists. Directed by Charmaine K Parkin, Foster draws on the racist messages communicated before the Brexit campaign and draws parallels with the political rhetoric communicated in Texas at that time and currently by Donald Trump.

Foster’s fictional depiction of the incident inspired director Charmaine K Parking to enhance the harrowing scenes, leaving audience members feeling shocked and stunned by the method of murder used by the perpetrators.

With the increase of hate crime experienced in England during this period, John Foster and Charmaine K Parking highlight the outcome in the US and pose the question of what will happen to minority groups in the UK post-Brexit.
